Happy Mother's Day! From one retired strong friend to another. It's soft girl season!

Here’s what I took away from a panel of judges and family law attorneys at last week’s OCBA Bench Bar Conference.

When it comes to parenting and visitation, judges want to see maturity. They want parents who can communicate in a healthy way, and who make decisions based on what’s actually best for the child.

Not what’s “fair.” Not what feels good. What’s practical. What serves the child.

That’s an important nugget for me as a Therapist and Mediation Prep Specialist, because it will help me help my clients understand that judges are not looking for the perfect parent. They are looking for the willing one. The one who can set aside their pain long enough to do right by their child.

That takes emotional preparation. That takes support. That’s why I do this work.
